Police in Paris rescued two hostages and arrested a man at a small business, after he demanded to be put in touch with the Iranian Embassy to deliver a message to the French government, according to authorities.
“The individual has been arrested and the hostages are out of danger,” Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said on Twitter.
Police said the incident is not terror-related while French media reported that the individual was armed with a handgun.
Police have asked people on social media not to relay false information.
The French special forces (BRI) and firemen secured the street where the hostage situation took place.
It is believed to have happened in Paris’ 10th district.
An investigation into why the suspect took people hostage has been opened.
